Andrea Meza, who is from Chihuahua, Mexico, is a m Andrea Meza, who is from Chihuahua, Mexico, is a model, make-up artist and has a degree in software engineering. She holds the pageant title Miss Universe 2020.

During an interview, Meza said she realized her dream of taking home the crown when she was around 15 years old -- after Mexican actress Ximena Navarrete won the Miss Universe 2010 title.

"I used to think that Mexican people were not able to get to these places and to be in these high positions, and after she won, she changed the mindset that I had," Meza explained. However, while Navarrete's win encouraged her, Meza still struggled with insecurities that prevented her from immediately chasing her dream.
"I didn't feel capable of doing this -- I always thought that I was not pretty enough, that I was not smart enough, and I was afraid of being in front of cameras or microphones, so let's just say that it was an impossible dream that I had," she shared. "But I started growing up and I decided that this was the path I needed to take in order to get out of my comfort zone and keep growing."

Meza also spoke about why it was important to her to highlight her software engineering degree during the pageant.
"In order to be represented or an ambassador of your country, you have to be prepared, and it doesn't matter the career that you choose -- I mean, I'm an engineer -- we have doctors, we have administrators, and the amazing thing about Miss Universe is that we have all these well-prepared women that want to talk about what they do in their normal life and inspire other women out there."

Meza shared more of her thoughts on how she can use her position to continue reshaping beauty standards in society.
"I always believe that beauty comes in different packages, and we all are different and we understand that. We can embrace ourselves and we can feel good about ourselves...It's not everything is about how you look. It's about who you are. It's about what you do, and what are you doing to help your society and help yourself." @andreamezamx

I applied to approximately 26-45 internships this I applied to approximately 26-45 internships this past semester. I have applied to some of the same companies for almost 3 years.
I have been denied to literally every internship I have ever applied to since I began my academic career. I took every "we regret to inform you" as an opportunity to grow and become better than I was yesterday.
I am proud to claim I have ADHD, not to gain sympathy, but to show people that if I can... YOU can.
I'm not the smartest person & you sure as hell don't have to be to achieve your goals.
Coming from a family of immigrants, I know the real definition of what hard work means. I have sacrificed a lot to get to where I am, for the same reasons my parents did to provide me with a life full of opportunities.

I tend to always diminish my hard work, but not today. If you've known me for a long time and know me well, you know when people have asked me what I want to do with my degree I've never changed my answer.

I believed in myself then and I believe in myself now... I have gotten this far in life because I do so. I have always been afraid of doing big new things, but at the end of the day I did them anyway because I knew deep down I could.

Today, I accepted my first -ever- internship at @nasajpl. I am terrified and beyond excited 🧿

{Remember when I was on the floor crying and hyperventilating because I was too scared to start grad school (~8 months ago)... I'll probably get that way a week before I start lol}

She served in the U.S Air Force as a medical logistician. Earned a double B.S in Nutrition Science and Molecular & Cellular Biology from UNLV & LSUS respectively. She is now pursuing a PhD in Cell Biology & Anatomy. @RunningonScience_

Maria Bravo .
Maria is an avid traveler and creator of @Daca.tions . Recent graduate at Portland State University. She graduated debt free as she paid her way through without any financial aid assistance. She is currently a coordinator and administrative function director for a health insurance company.

Lidia De La Cruz
Creator of Poderosa Coding. Her debt freedom journey was born out of a conversation with a mentor. She is pursuing Financial Independence while switching careers into tech. Follow her coding journey & finances. @PoderosaCoding

Ashima Sharma
Founder, hiker and engineer. She is the founder of Dreami (@Dreami.io). She started her career as a chemical engineer and pivoted into Tech. She went through many mistakes, little guidance, and a sense of loneliness through her journey. Her experiences inspired her to find a solution to aid other women – She took the initiative to bring Dreami to life.

America Rodriguez
Cvil engineering student. Dreamer. As many of us, America was often the “only one” in some spaces, but realized she wasn’t that alone after attending a few conferences for Latinx in STEM. She resonated with hundreds of others. This inspired America to build Chingonas in STEM — to build a community and feature more role models.

Hi Chingonas!! My name is Gina Moreno and I am mul Hi Chingonas!! My name is Gina Moreno and I am multi-dimensional first generation Mexicana. I am an industrial engineer (BS) and systems engineer (MS) by degrees, and now I am a program manager at Microsoft. There, I merge my interests of lean ideologies and DevOps in a business agility team for SAP on azure.

If you are a person with MANY interest and have found yourself asking "what should I do for the rest of my life?" I would challenge you to adapt a new philosophy that has helped me in my path by asking a different question: "What things am I extremely interested in that I can further explore RIGHT NOW".

My "spark" for tech started in high school, when I thought studying computer science was fixing computers (I was always the familiy's tech expert). In college I said "yes" to every opportunity I had to explore my interests: a dance team, engineering organizations, study abroad, traveling for conferences and internships in aerospace and automotive. After all my experiences there was always a need to learn more about other things and this helped me gather context and grip to the direction I wanted to go. The tech industry really resonated with me because of the amazing culture, high salary, big impact, broad reach and all the innovation possible to make other's life easier (at the end of the day this is IE).

To be frank I think I will always have that feeling of wanting to keep exploring. I love to travel, dance, create content, try new food, and always learn something new. I still explore my interests everyday: I started my own blog Ginaemoreno.com/blog about being a first generation American and create content about personal empowerment and awareness on tiktok (@ginaemoreno). The advice I would give another Chingona in STEM is to not be afraid of investing all the time and energy that you give to your family, career and friends in YOURSELF. Spend time truly learning what you love, appreciate, don't like, your values and purpose. You are the biggest investment of your lifetime, and loving every inch of you is worth it <3

So you’re the only Latina in the room, but what are you going to do about it?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I grew up in a predominantly white state and became accustomed of being the only Latina everywhere I went.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is no different now working in Finance, where women and Latinos are underrepresented.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I would be lying if I didn’t say it wasn’t frustrating and a constant reminder that I don’t naturally belong in those spaces. But I no longer spend so much time focusing on it and instead use my energy to take action. And you can too!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ways I’ve taken action:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌟 Mentoring inside and outside the firm: We are all rising together and they will not make the same mistakes I made if we can avoid it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌟 Joined diversity recruiting efforts: I have a seat at the table when hiring decisions are made and look out for those who are often overlooked.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌟 Advocate: I speak up for myself to ensure that there is representation in the highest and toughest tables to gain access to, but also for others to see que si se puede.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌟 Calling out bias when I see it: I don’t care if others become uncomfortable when I point out how biased their actions or ideas are. Mansplaining or insensitive jokes...not on my watch!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The “Only Latina...” narrative will be just that until we become comfortable in the uncomfortable, at least while we work to change it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What are other ways to take action? ✨

Growing up, I considered my undocumented status the most vulnerable part of my identity. I didn’t speak about it unless asked and seeing as to how much my parents sacrificed daily through all their arduous labor, I worked diligently to excel as a daughter, sister, and student.

During the past 4.5 years, just as I was learning to navigate higher education and STEM culture, I immersed myself in a newfound sense of liberation. I became politically awakened around 45’s election during my first fall quarter and found myself steadily behind my professor as we marched in a campus wide student protest. Being “ni de aquí ni de allá”, I had so many uncertainties and yet, I began to question the political structures of this country (especially those that have affected my family all my life).

At times, my inquisitive nature triggered an anxiety that coupled itself with the manifestations of childhood traumas. When I faced Subject to Dismissal status as a late third year, I nearly lost sight of my resilience before choosing to reinvent the most important relationship I have, the one to myself.

Today, I am proudly inspired by those assets of my multicultural- intersectional identity which I once dimmed away thinking they made me vulnerable. I have never been more proud of my native Spanish tongue with all its flavors and accents 🤎

Amo ser una mujer #Mexicana 🌞

I’m grateful to God for the loving and supportive friends, family and life partner that surround me ❤️

Up next, the pursuit of dual grad school degrees! #paramigente

I’ve always loved using my hands and I became really interested in surgery. I finished undergrad and went straight into medical school. It was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done but so worth it. I’m also a licensed cosmetologist and mom.

Carolina was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexic Carolina was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. She chose bioengineering and studied at Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering in OSU. Math was her favorite subject since she didn't need to know another language in order to understand it. She had amazing math and chemistry teachers who helped her become passionate about the subjects and always motivated and pushed her to learn more and believe in her abilities.

Carolina always had a soft spot towards helping people with disabilities. Growing up, her birthday would always land during el Teletón, Mexico's annual 24-plus-hour TV and radio broadcast to raise money for children rehabilitation centers. She remembers going out and fundraising. This intrigued her to learn more about prosthetics and orthotics as she is considering furthering her education in the subject eventually. She loves that her major allows Her to create a positive impact in the lives of many.

Carolina is now a validation engineer at Genentech. She is active in diversity initiatives at her work and likes to give back by supporting and mentoring others.

1. If your professors have already posted the syll 1. If your professors have already posted the syllabi online, check them and see what you’re in for this semester. Map out important due dates and test days and add them to your planner.
2. It’s good to keep it readily available, especially when you’re still a little bit unfamiliar with it. Include professor names, course numbers, time of the course and the zoom IDs.
3. if you are a student who also works, now’s the time to figure out which hours will work for you and which shifts you can take. It also might be a good time to look into joining a new club.
4. Figure out what worked for you last semester and what didn’t. Maybe you want to try heading to bed earlier or waking up earlier. Perhaps you plan on saving money and brewing coffee or tea at home instead of hitting up coffee shops in the mornings.
5. You might already know this, but I’ll let you know just in case. On iPhone you can set alarms to go off on specific days each week, even multiple days per week. This prevents you forgetting to turn on your alarm, which can be very detrimental if you have morning classes. Doing this will help your body fall into a normalized routine before starting a new semester so you won’t feel as tired.
6. It’s not always about the work, you need some fun, too! This is especially crucial if you know you’re going to have random gaps of time between classes during the week. This is also a great idea to utilize your time–instead of spending an hour figuring out what to watch you can just look at your list! I’ll make a post soon of some of my favorite books.
7. This includes dumping out any crumbs, crumpled up sticky notes and scratches of paper. Toss out pens that no longer work, papers you no longer need and do some general cleaning of your space. If you can, I encourage to rearrange your work space and place your desk in a different location to get you feel motivated.

On average, nationally women earn 82 cents to every dollar earned by men. Even in high-earning STEM occupations, women are paid less than their male counterparts, earning 86% compared to their male colleagues. However, when we disaggregate by race, Black and Latina women experience an even more significant gap, earning 73% and 69% respectively compared to White men in STEM.
